6 officers vie for 1 DG post

Tamil Nadu has a total six posts for DGs and currently there are five DGs serving, including TK Rajendran, who is head of the State police as DGP, Law and Order. Other DGs are KP Maghendran, SR Jangid, JK Tripathy and CK Gandhirajan. 

All the 1986 batch officers, who are now serving as Additional Director Generals of Police, would like to be elevated as Director Generals because many of their batchmates in other states have already reached the highest rank. “With just one post vacant, the government cannot elevate all the ADGs as DG. So there is lot of string pulling happening at the top,” sources disclosed to DT Next.

With one DG post vacant, it is natural that the senior-most among the ADGs is promoted to DG. “But there is a problem. ADGP Jaffer Sait who is one of the seniormost officers among the 1986 batch as per the inter se based on the performance of IPS academy was placed under suspension in the past after DVAC registered a case against him immediately after the AIADMK came to power in 2011. His suspension was revoked only last year,” an officer noted.

The officer next in line is ADGP Sri Lakshmi Prasad, who has maintained a clean record throughout her service. Though she can be elevated, top brasses in the DGP office as well as in the State Secretariat hope to promote the entire 1986 batch officers including Ashutosh Shukla, MK Jha, N Tamil Selvan and Ashish Bengra together rather than elevating just one officer.
