Pointing out that about 20,000 houses were being constructed to resettle people dwelling in huts on the banks of river Cooum in the city, he said that about 8,000 of the 20,000 houses have been completed and handed over to the beneficiaries, and the houses were constructed with all amenities, including schools and periodic maintenance was being undertaken there.

Clarifying that the government does not construct places of worship and the inhabitants were free to construct them on their own, the former Chief Minister reiterated that the government was working to achieve the target of late Jayalalithaa who set the target of making Chennai slum-free.
