Maniarasan attack: Special team to nab culprits
Thanjavur Superintendent of Police, who visited the spot where Cauvery Right Retrieval Committee (CRRC) co-ordinator P Maniarasan was attacked by miscreants on Sunday night, informed that a special team has been formed to nab the culprits. Farmers’ association leaders, who also visited him, said that the activists’ lives are under threat in the state and appealed to ensure safety of the farmer.

The Tamil Nationalist Movement leader and the Cauvery Right Retrieval Committee Coordinator P Maniarasan (71), a resident of Kalaignar Nagar in Thanjavur was travelling pillion on a bike driven by Srinivasan, a member of the party, on Sunday night to board the Uzhavan Express bound for Chennai.
As the bike was nearing the Central Warehouse Corporation on Vallam Road, two miscreants on another bike suddenly pulled the bag from the hands of Maniarasan. They also pulled down Maniarasan from the vehicle in the process. Maniarasan, who fell on the road, sustained grievous injuries to his knees and hands. The duo decamped with his bag which contained Rs 700 in cash, ATM cards, PAN card, a laptop computer and a mobile phone.
The injured Maniarasan was rushed to a private hospital on Tiruchy Road in Thanjavur. Based on his complaint, the Thanjavur Medical College police registered a case under section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of Indian Penal code.
Based on the CCTV footage obtained from the New Bus stand area, the Thanjavur SP said that the duo had been following Maniarasan’s bike for around 2 km. K Venkatraman, general secretary of Tamil Desiya Periyakkam, in his statement said as the duo had followed Maniarasan for quite a distance the motive of the attack might not have been robbery as the activists are now-a-days being targeted.
Later, PR Pandian, farmer leader, who visited Maniararan said, there are several such instances against the farmers and those who fight for the farmers. He charged the government with threatening the protesters with police and failing to provide security to the leaders who fight for public causes.

The state government would take action against the culprits involved in waylaying P Maniarasan, who is the coordinator of Cauvery Rights Retrieval Committee in the Delta region, said Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. This assurance from the Chief Minister came in response to the demand from DMK legislator M Ram Chandran (Orathanadu), who raked it up in the Assembly during the Zero Hour. He sought that the state should ensure protection for leaders in public life. Ram Chandran observed that Maniarasan was intercepted and attacked by a gang in the dark of the night in Thanjavur. Palaniswami said as many as three special teams have been formed by the Thanjavur police in this regard which is probing the incident and that they were poring over the CCTV footage gathered from the crime scene vicinity.“All those involved would be arrested and stern action would be taken against them,” he told the House.
Political leaders registered their protest against attack on Tamil Nationalist Movement leader P Maniarasan. They demanded the government to take stern action against the assailants and protect the protesters. “The attack on Maniarasan raises several questions whether it was a preplanned attack, or they conspired to murder him. The CPI is strongly condemning such act,” said R Mutharasan, state secretary of the party. Mutharasan sought the arrest of those attempting to murder Maniarasan. “The police should swing into action to arrest them and they should be booked,” he said. Stating that the state has recently been witnessing many protests and the concept of portraying the protesters as ‘anti-social elements’ has become rampant, the CPI leader said, “Democratic forces should unite to voice in unison to end this practice.” Meanwhile, state secretary of CPM, K Balakrishnan, said, “Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniawami’s reply over TV debate at Coimbatore is regrettable. Even though the TV channel asked permission multiple times to conduct the discussion, the government denied it.” The government should immediately withdraw cases against director Ameer and the TV channel, he demanded.
