Oman releases 10 Kanniyakumari fishermen
Kanniyakumari fishermen, 10 of them, who were held in Oman, were released recently by the Oman government. The released fishermen would soon reach their home.

The fishermen started fishing from Kochi in the boat named ‘Kavin Bright,’ of one Antony Xavier, from Thuthur, in Kanniyakumari district, on April 4.
The fishermen when they were fishing in the Arabian Sea drifted towards the coast of Oman and on April 26 they were arrested by the Oman Navy.
Following that they were arrested and kept in Oman prison.
The 10 fishermen were identified as Antony Xavier, Anto Thadeuse, Arockiyam, all three from Thuthur, Silvestor, from EP Thurai, Bensigar, Antony Raj, Sunil, Joseph Besky, John Cleetus, Amal Raj all six from Melmidalam village.
In the meantime, Justin Antony, founder president, International Fishermen Development Trust (INFIDET) sent various representations to the Union government officials and officials in Indian Embassy in Oman. In the representations he had informed them that the boat had drifted owing to heavy wind and so they did not venture into the Oman sea border intentionally.
Based on his representations inquiry were conducted with the fishermen and based on the probe, the officials found that the fishermen did not intentionally venture into their maritime border and so released them. Speaking to DT Next, Justin Antony said that the Union government should be thanked for the swift action taken in the fishermen issue and added that the fishermen would reach their home in another few days.
4 struggling for life at sea rescued
Four fishermen struggling to stay afloat in rough seas for over two hours after their boat capsized off Kodiakarai coast in the district were rescued by other fishermen and brought ashore. Fisheries department officials said the four men, hailing from Seruthur hamlet, had set out to sea on Saturday.
Due to rough seas their boat capsized and they fell into the sea and were struggling for over two hours, they said.
Some other fishermen passing through saw their plight, rescued them and brought them ashore on Saturday night, they added. All of them were taken to the General Hospital here. While three fishermen were treated as outpatients, one was hospitalised, they said.
