DMK to reorganise party districts for better coordination

Going by the existing demarcation of party districts, which nearly doubled from 35 to 65 a few years ago at the behest of DMK working president MK Stalin, quite a few Assembly seats fall within more than one party district, which had affected coordination during elections in the past.

The proposed reorganisation would be done in tune with the report tabled by a three-member committee headed by former DMK Parliamentary party leader TR Baalu. The committee was constituted in February last, coinciding with an elaborate review Stalin had undertaken to better the functioning of the party. The high command has proposed to give effect to the district-wise reorganisation in consultation with Stalin who had received the report from the committee recently.

The party felt the heat of organisational difficulties in RK Nagar by election in which lack of coordination between party districts was found to be a key reason for one of the worst drubbings the party had suffered at the hustings. A few districts would also be reduced in size. The high command was understood to have felt that a district like Tiruvallur and a few in northern and southern TN had more than required number of party districts, which had only worsened infighting.

The proposed reorganisation, however, would not affect the existing district secretaries, most of who would remain undisturbed in the rejig, contrary to the popular expectation of majority cadre who wanted at least a few of the long-standing district bosses given the sack. Though the party contemplated a notable shake up at the district level, it had subsequently shelved the idea considering the larger ramifications it would have during the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

TNCC cadre had become weary as they have not been given proper work and Congress president Rahul Gandhi would change the state leadership anytime as he has the supreme authority, said former TNCC president EVKS Elangovan in Karur on Saturday. Elangovan, also condemned former President Pranab Mukherji’s participation in the RSS conclave and said, the former President had betrayed the party.
