    TN makes a bike every 6 seconds, says Minister

    Replying to the debate on demand for grants in the state Assembly, state Industries Minister MC Sampath on Thursday said that the state has a cluster of 10 vehicle manufacturing centers, which house auto majors like Ford, Hyundai, Renault Nissan, BMW and Mitsubishi.

    Claiming that 10.89 lakh cars, 31.84 lakh two wheelers and 1.31 lakh heavy vehicles were manufactured in the state in 2017-18, Sampath informed the House that the state produces a bike every six seconds, while a car and heavy vehicle is manufactured in 20 seconds and 2 minutes respectively.

    Bringing the statistics released by department of industrial policy and promotion of the Centre to his aid, the Industries Minister said the state recorded a threefold jump in FDI (foreign direct investment) in the last seven years. The state has attracted FDI to the tune of Rs 1.18 lakh crore during 2011-17 period, against the Rs 33,024 crore in 2000-2011 period, the Minister added.

    MSME ALLOCATION HIGHLIGHTS
    • 2 crore to reimburse (maximum Rs 1 lakh) MSMEs applying for international certifications like ISO9001/ISO14001/HACCP/BIS/ ZED.
    • 5 crore to set up a Coir firm under Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries in Tiruvarur district.
    • 40 lakh to develop road and drainages in Cooperative Industrial Estate in Vyasarpadi.
    • 18 lakh to procure nine sewing machines for industrial cooperative unions to manufacture 40 and 42 inch vests for women in Tamil Nadu Special Police.
