Palani temple, located at an altitude of more than 300 metres above the ground level, is one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan. It is visited by several lakhs of devotees every year. A winch and a rope car system is available at present to assist the elderly and differently-abled devotees to reach the temple.

The present rope car can carry 350 devotees per hour but due to the ever-increasing count of devotees, there is a long queue for using the rope car. Subsequently, the HR&CE department decided to construct another rope car to carry more number of devotees.

A feasibility report for the facility was submitted to the department after a study was carried out in 2017. Based on the report, Rs 73 crore was allotted to construct the new rope car facility. The foundation stone was laid at South Giri Street on Monday.

Selvaraj, Joint Commissioner of the temple, said the work would be completed in 18 months and a private company would maintain the rope car facility for five years.

He also said that more than 1,200 devotees can be carried per hour after the commissioning of the second rope car facility.
