The Minister in the presence of M Udhayakumar, Dindigul MP and Neenu Ittyerah, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Madurai, inaugurated three lifts, wi-fi services and extension of foot-over bridge at Dindigul Railway Junction on Sunday. Among the three lifts one is present at platform one, the second is in platforms 2 and 3 and the third is at platform 4 and 5 and the total cost of lifts is Rs 1.5 crore.

Passengers can easily access the internet at the platforms and in the waiting halls with the launch of wi-fi facility and all the platforms now have been connected with foot-over bridges.

“It has always been the endeavour of the Railways to provide adequate amenities to the passengers at the stations. Certain amenities are provided at the time of construction of new stations based on anticipated volume of traffic. Amenities are further augmented from time to time with growth in passenger traffic handled at stations, on the basis of the need felt, expectations of the travelling public and availability of funds,” said Neenu Ittyerah in her inaugural address.

She also listed various steps taken to improve passenger services such as lifts and escalators at station, battery operated vehicles and wheel-chair assistance for senior citizens and differently-abled. She added well maintained retiring room, waiting halls and executive lounges for passengers and wi-fi facility at important stations have been provided.

However, Dindigul Sreenivasan did not seem to be satisfied at the facilities installed at Dindigul Railway Junction. He said that Dindigul station is devoid of basic amenities and Southern Railways does not take care of the station much, which attracts a lot of tourists.

“Southern Railways is more concerned about Chennai Central alone and all facilities are concentrated there. Even Coimbatore, Tiruchy and Erode have better amenities and Dindigul, despite attracting large number of tourists is devoid of those facilities,” he rued.

He requested the Southern Railway officials to include the necessary basic amenities at Dindigul Junction.
