Recreational fishing to come up in The Nilgiris
Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar, replying to the debate on demand for grants for his department in the Assembly on Friday, announced Rs 40 lakh for the recreational Trout fishing project on Friday. People of the state would soon get an exclusive inland recreational fishing hub.

The picturesque Avalanche hamlet in The Nilgiris would be used to promote recreational fishing in the state. Trout, a fish variety commonly found in cold regions, would be farmed in large numbers in the hatchery at Avalanche and left upstream in the mountains of The Nilgiris. Trout fingerlings would be brought from Himachal Pradesh to stabilise Trout population in Nilgiris and promote recreational fishing.
Major Announcements in TN Assembly
- Animal Husbandry dept to develop an app at Rs 50 lakh to disseminate information to farmers regarding schemes and livestock diseases.
- Rs 30 lakh subsidy to set up fish hatcheries to promote private fish farms.
- Rs 20 lakh to offer a certificate course on sea food production at Royapuram.
- Rs 8 crore to set up artificial reefs in Palaverkadu Lake to increase fish resource.
- Rs 6.29 crore to insure 1.25 milch cows or 12.5 lakh goat varieties.
- 1,000 genetically modified hybrid Mecheri sheep to be raised at Rs 5.25 crore.
- Rs 60 lakh for 5,000 litre capacity milk cooling centre in Pudukkottai.
- Rs 30 lakh to take 30 leading milk producers of 17 districts on an overseas tour to study modern and scientific milk production technologies.
- Rs 5 crore to increase the length of the jetty in Chennai fishing harbour by 70 meters, so that 100 additional fishing boats can be berthed.
- Rs 50 lakh for resource mapping to promote coastal fishing in Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai and Thoothukudi districts.
- Rs 1 crore to develop the fish nursery at Attur in Kancheepuram.
