Madras HC closes Sthapathy’s bail plea

The Madras High Court on Thursday closed the anticipatory bail petition of Muthiah Sthapathy, the state’s chief sthapathy, based on prosecution submission that there is no case pending against him in connection with illegalities in the making of the Tiruthani Subramania Swamy temple’s gold vimanam.

Justice N Sathishkumar, before whom Muthiah’s anticipatory bail plea apprehending arrest in the case came up, closed the case on recording the prosecution submission.

The petitioner had submitted that he had visited the temple last in 2010 to attend to the stone and concrete construction of the Moolavar Vimanam and was neither given the responsibility nor did he participate in the gold metal covering work.

He further submitted that even as per Government Orders, casting of metal idol or carrying out any work with metal — be it gold, silver, copper, tin or iron — is not his work and he has to attend only to Silpa Sastra work, which is the medium related to stone.

Stating that in two other cases against him he got anticipatory bail, the petitioner said the police are trying to implicate him in as many criminal cases as possible for having said that the police investigation is a tainted one.
