    State to tackle jumbo attacks with bee fences

    The state government has proposed to use bees to prevent elephant- human conflict in the state. State Forest Minister ‘Dindigul’ C Sreenivasan announced Rs 1.28 crore to erect fences using bees in Coimbatore forest division to prevent elephant-human conflict and stop animals from destroying crops in 2018-19 fiscal.

    Replying to the debate on demand for grants for his department in the Assembly, Sreenivasan said that about 110 villages bordering 120 km forest land were affected by human-animal conflict in Coimbatore Forest Division. 

    The innovative idea of using bees as fence to prevent elephants from destroying crops has been successfully tested in African nations, the Minister said, adding that the cost-effective and eco-friendly idea of fencing crops using bees could be easily executed by the farmers. 

    The Minister has also proposed to set up an Elite Force at two different stations in the state to effectively handle exigences like forest fire, kidnapping, encroachment and human-animal conflict. Sreenivasan has allocated Rs 50 lakh to train and procure gadgets for the elite force.
