Pollution board asked to keep a tab on tanneries
The pollution control board and related departments have been ordered to check whether government norms were adhered to scrupulously by tanneries in Vellore district, national commission for safai karamcharis member Jagadish Hirmani said on Wednesday.
Vellore
Interacting with media representatives after talking to the family members of the three persons who died last March while cleaning an effluent tank in a private tannery near Ambur, Hirmani was informed that the deaths occurred as the tannery used workers without training and without safety equipment.
When he was told about the death of fish in a lake near Ambur due to untreated effluents being let out into the waterbody, he wondered whether a government which does not bother about people would be bothered about saving fish.
Later, Hirmani had a meeting with civil and police officials at the Vellore Collector’s office in which he enquired about various schemes for sanitary workers and their implementation. Those present included Collector SA Raman, SP P Pagalavan and DRO G Sengottayan.
