Terror angle: TN cops probe man from Melur

Niaz had just completed a jail term for his alleged links with terrorist organisations and for recruiting two French citizens to be trained in Pakistan. Sources believe that he had allegedly been involved with terrorists responsible for the 2002 Bali bombings in Indonesia which claimed 202 lives.

Niyaz was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment in France.

“He is not an accused as per the Indian law. He was questioned by the agencies because of his background,” a police officer from Tamil Nadu said. The security agencies are now looking for a suspected money trail between Niyaz and his contacts in Tamil Nadu.

Niyas had completed his BE in mechanical engineering from MIET Engineering College in Tiruchy, and had later worked in a few companies in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Qatar - before his marriage to Habibuniza, a French national, took him to France in the year 2008. He was working as a mechanical engineer at an oil company there before he was arrested or his suspected links with Al Qaeda.
