Two labourers in Tiruchy and Thanjavur, who had returned from Kerala recently and were suspected to have contracted the Nipah virus, underwent treatment at the medical colleges in the districts on Friday. However, officials claimed it was only ordinary viral fever.

R Periasamy (22) of Karvadi village along with 40 others had left to work in a road project in Kerala. On Wednesday, they had returned home, but Periasamy was suffering from fever-related conditions.
Fearing that he may be affected with the Nipah virus, his parents took him to the Manapparai GH but from there he was referred to the Tiruchy GH. At the Tiruchy GH, he was kept in isolation. However, Dean Dr G Anitha said he had simple viral fever, due to frequent travelling. “There is no possibility of Nipah virus,” she said.
Meanwhile, a 35-year-old man, who was also working in Kerala, has been admitted with fever in the Thanjavur Medical College. “The man returned to his hometown in Ariyalur three days back and since he had fever and panicked over the Nipah virus, he got admitted,” hospital authorities said. Dr S Jayakumar, Dean of the Thanjavur Medical College, said the patient did not show any Nipah symptoms.
