The practical papers for each subject were assessed out of 200 marks earlier and now it has been changed to 100 marks, said TN Vocational Teachers Federation general secretary SN Janardhanan.

Calling this change exciting, Janardhanan said, “this change comes first in the 40-year history of the vocational stream in Tamil Nadu. When the vocational stream was started in 1978-79, it had 66 subjects and it was later reduced to 44 subjects.”

The federation lauded education secretary D Udayachandran’s effort, the brain behind the current change. “The new syllabus is compatible with today’s needs and it will make the students self-reliant,” said federation treasurer S Ranganthan. The Girija Vaidyanathan committee reduced the 44 subjects to 12 subjects in 200809.

“The change in subject names is to ensure that students find it easy to approach subjects academically,” said federation joint coordinator D Ramchandran.
