Vaiko denies kin has stakes in Sterlite
MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Wednesday denied state Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar’s charge that the MDMK leader’s son-in-law holds stakes in Sterlite.

Responding to Jayakumar, Vaiko cited media reports that the MDMK was expelled by AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa from the alliance before the 2011 Assembly elections following pressure from Vedanta group and others.
Speaking to media representatives at the airport here, Vaiko said people would not have been killed now if they had shut the company.
The government had acted as an agent of Sterlite and mobilised the police force to protect the company without caring about people’s sentiments.
When Sterlite was ransacked in Maharashtra, then Chief Minister Sharad Pawar had refused to book cases against the people and the plant had to be shifted to Thoothukudi, he said.
Recalling that he had obtained an order from the Madras High Court for closing down the company, Vaiko said the Supreme Court had turned it down following an appeal by the company.
Vaiko said he had filed another petition against the company which is pending before the apex court.
Besides, yet another petition by him would come up for hearing in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on June 13 while his petition in the National Green Tribunal to close down the factory would be heard on June 6.
Meanwhile, the People’s Union for Civil Liberties demanded that the government take action not merely against the subordinate police and revenue officials for the firing incident on Tuesday, but also against the entire chain of command responsible for overseeing the incident.
Its general secretary Dr V Suresh demanded that all those police and administrative officials present at the scene of firing must be identified and suspended forthwith, pending a police investigation.
