Stressing on the importance of preventing the spread of the virus in the state, health officials have urged the public to avoid consumption of any fruit or vegetable without washing.

“It is important to refrain from the consumption of fruits bitten by any virus or insects,” said Dr K Kolandaisamy, Director, Department of Public health, adding that it was important to understand the need to maintain hygiene and keep one’s hands clean at all times.

Listing the symptoms of the disease, he said, “If one has complaints of fever, headache, drowsiness, mental confusion and the like, the person must immediately consult a doctor, as early detection is extremely important. If these signs continue, it can also lead to coma,” he stated, quoting the similarities between brain fever and this particular virus.

Stating that those infected with the virus were usually treated with supportive care, a health official said, “It is important for the infected person to be hydrated. Some patients suffer from respiratory problems when infected with this virus.

It is hence important to seek early clinical care,” he stressed, adding, “We are also working towards ensuring sufficient facilities at all medical facilities in case of a requirement in the state.” It may be noted that the Nipah virus spreads from fruit bats to animals through bites and from these bats to humans when they consume fruits bitten by these bats.
