    Class 10 board records 94.5 per cent pass percentage this year

    The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Government Examinations on Wednesday announced a marginal increase in the overall pass percentage this year in the Class 10 board exams which stood at 94.5% against 94.4% recorded in 2017.

    Announcing the results, School Education Minister KA Sengottaiyan said of the total 9.50 lakh students who had appeared for the examination through schools, girls outscored boys with a pass percentage of 96.4%. Boys scored 92.5%.

    The School Education Department announced that it has decided to do away with the long followed practice of ranking students at the State and district levels on the basis of aggregate of marks secured.

    The minister said a total of 9,402 students secured above 481 out of 500 while 56,837 students secured marks between 451 to 480. Likewise, as many as 64,144 students secured marks in the range of 426 to 450, while 76,413 students secured marks between 401-425, followed by 3,66,084 students who secured marks between 301-400.

    On subject-wise pass percentage, the minister said 96.42% passed in Language, 96.50% passed in English, 96.18% passed in Mathematics, 98.47% passed in Science and 96.75% passed in Social Science. About 10.01 lakh students, including private candidates, registered for the exams held from March 16 to April 20. Of the total, 4.76 lakh were girls and 4.74 lakh boys.

    The Minister also said that a total of 5,584 schools registered 100% pass percentage. Likewise, of the 5,456 government high schools, 1,687 secured 100% pass percentage.

    Sengottaiyan also warned that private schools should not advertise students’ marks to secure admissions. “Strict action would be taken against private schools issuing advertisements based on Class 10 results,” he added. The Minister said that students who wish to apply for re-totalling, can submit their applications from Thursday. “Those who have failed can attempt re-examination from June 28,” he noted.
