On May 21st evening, the district witnessed strong winds followed by heavy rain for about two hours uprooting several trees in Karumandapam, Woraiyur, Thillai Nagar, Thennur and Dheeran Nagar.

In suburban areas such as Mannachanallur, Samayapuram, Siruganur, Vayalur, Somarasampettai and Thuvarankurichi, the wind and rain lasted for over three hours, uprooting banana plantations in an area of at least 3,000 acres. Meanwhile, in Perambalur, banana crops in Veppanthattai and Perambalur regions, cultivated in at least 100 acres, were destroyed.

“We have been preparing for harvesting the banana crop but the rains played spoilsport. In the whole Vayalur, Somarasampettai and Maruthandakurichi stretch, banana trees have been uprooted,” said Ayilai Siva Sooriyan, Tamil Nadu Farmers association leader.
