    Nearly 240 sovereigns burgled from house, shop in southern districts

    Residents of southern districts were shocked after a spate of robberies in which nearly 240 sovereigns of jewels, 1 kg silver and cash were lost.

    In the first case, 138 sovereigns of jewels were burgled from the house of a retired Air Force personnel, in Colachel, on Friday evening, when the family had gone to the hospital. On his return, Venu, the house owner, was shocked to find the rear entrance of his house broken open. On a thorough check he found that 138 sovereigns of jewels and Rs 26,000, in cash had been robbed. On information, Eraniel police along with forensic experts inspected the house and lifted fingerprints.Police registered a case on Saturday and have launched a hunt for the burglars.

    House looted in Ettayapuram

    In another case,over 100 sovereigns of jewels and close to one kg of silver jewellery were burgled from a jewellery shop in Ettayapuram, in Thoothukudi district on Saturday.

    Police inspected the crime scene and during investigations found out that the culprits had drilled a big hole on the wall of a nearby lodge through which they had gained entry into the jewellery shop. The burglars had used gas welding machines to open the iron chest where jewels were kept. After a thorough examination,Venkateshraja, the owner of the shop, told the police that over 100 sovereigns of gold and close to one kg of silver jewellery were missing.Neither sniffer dogs nor the CCTV installed in the shop were of any help. The burglars had taken the hard disk of the CCTV along with them.

    TheEttayapurampolice have launched a search of the burglars. Police said that theymust have watched the shop and the movements in the locality for some time before committing the robbery.

    Sources said that 60 sovereigns of gold jewellery were burgled from another shop, in the same locality in March and the culprits have not been arrested yet in that case too.
