No bar on online admission for engineering colleges: Madras HC

Refusing to accede to submitting written applications for admission to engineering courses in the State, the Madras High Court on Thursday held that as the online method has been successfully accepted by the people in the last two years, the restriction to it from 2018 onwards would not deprive eligible students from applying.

The vacation division bench comprising Justice V Parthiban and Justice PD Audikesavalu said, “As a matter of fact, it is more beneficial to the applicants by virtue of the decentralisation of the entire process in a transparent manner without the requirement to travel all the way to Chennai from across the State.”

“Moreover, the setting up of at least one TNEA facilitation centre in every district with trained staff members including those from the faculty of Anna University, satisfies the requirement of easy accessibility to all students,” the bench added.

However, the bench on recording the submission by TNEA that it has been agreed to include Demand Draft (DD) in the modes of receipt of application fee, said, “When the selections are open to the public it is incumbent upon the authority to ensure that compliance like payment be within reach of the common man. Otherwise, it would result in negation of equal participation, though there is nothing unlawful to introduce other additional modes.”

Also, based on Additional Advocate General PH Aravind Pandian’s submission that to allay fears of hardships in the efficacy of the online registration method, this court may monitor the admission process, the bench on directing Anna University to file a report of compliance with supporting materials on June 8, recorded that receipt of payment through DD, availability of trained staff at TNEA facilitation Centre and posting a supervisor at each centre would be publicised.

DD allowed: Anna University announced that payment of online registration through DD would be accepted at facilitation centres from Friday. The DD would have to be drawn in favour of “The Secretary, Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions, Anna University”. General category students have to pay Rs 500; SC/ST candidates Rs 250 and students under special reservation category Rs 100.
