The complainant, Backiaraj, a reporter at a Tamil weekly magazine, had written an article in the magazine criticising DMK working president M K Stalin and the article had appeared on Tuesday.

Moorthy had on Wednesday contacted Backiaraj on his mobile phone, and had hurled verbal abuses at him.

Moorthy had also allegedly threatened him of dire consequences.

After Moorthy, one of his supporters, Nehru Pandian, too had called Backiaraj on his phone, and had abused and threatened him.

Following the incident, Backiaraj had filed a police complaint with the Thirupparankundram Police and based on it, the police carried out an investigation.

During the investigation, the police found that both Moorthy and Nehru Pandian had abused and threatened Backiaraj and filed a case against the two persons.

Lawyers from the DMK had on Thursday submitted a petition to the Madurai Police Commissioner demanding that the police withdraw the case against Moorthy and Nehru Pandian. They claimed that Moorthy had just asked the reporter about the article and did not threaten him.
