Class 12 Results: Science subjects may see dip in centum this year

Class 12 students in Tamil Nadu may find it hard to get centums this year, especially in science subjects, for teachers, who were involved in evaluation, believe that most of the candidates have made only a casual attempt in the subjects.

As the results will to be out in just two days, evaluators say that many students would miss out on getting the perfect score due to silly mistakes and tricky questions, especially in Chemistry and Biology.

“From day one of the evaluation, students’ performance in the science group, especially in Biology, was poor. In Zoology, students did not perform well with respect to several questions,” A Kannan, a science teacher, who undertook the answer paper evaluation work at CSI Bain School here, told DT Next.

He claimed that in Chemistry, even smart students who may have been able to answer most of the questions, failed to negotiate simple questions, which were asked in a tricky manner. “This would largely affect centum scores,” he said.

Likewise, in Physics students faced difficulties in answering some questions. “Every year students getting centum in Physics had come down drastically. This year too it is expected to be less, compared to last year,” Kannan said.

According to data put out by the Directorate of School Education of Tamil Nadu, last year only 187 students secured centum in Physics. Likewise, students securing centum also dropped from 1,703 in 2016 to 1,123 last year.

The data further revealed that the number of centums in Biology also dropped by three times from 775 in 2016 to 221 last year.

“Even in Biology, the number of students scoring centum would be less. However, in the southern districts, some students have performed well in it,” P K Illamaran, Tamil Nadu Teachers Association State president said. He claimed that this year the questions were not asked from the book and students did not anticipate it. According to him, the Mathematics question paper this year was not that difficult.
