A senior official from the training institute in Guindy, preferring anonymity, pointed out that students who pursue industrial courses have several practical classes on daily basis.

“During their training, it was noticed that most students do not wear shoes during sessions like welding. This compromises their safety,” he added. The official said the Labour and Employment Department recently recommended that free shoes be supplied for the students to ensure a uniform dress code during various training sessions. “The government therefore decided to implement a new scheme for supplying shoes free of cost for male and female students undergoing training in various courses offered by the institute across the state,” the official said.

The shoes will be procured after a tender process. The company is expected to supply the product within two months from the date of order placement. “During the first phase, we will be ordering 24,000 shoes for the year 2018-19. The scheme is expected to be extended to next year as well,” the official said.
