Unmindful of risks, tourists frolic at Dhanushkodi beach
It was only on May 5 that three children had drowned when they were playing in the Dhanushkodi beach. However, people do not seem to have learnt any lesson from the incident as they are still seen frolicking in the sea, regardless of the mortal danger.
Madurai
Ever since the new road to Dhanushkodi was laid, hundreds of tourists flock to the spot and many riskily take bath in the sea.
The Bay of Bengal at Dhanushkodi is quite rough and the underwater current is extremely strong.
The main reason for the strong undercurrent is because both the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Strait, with different characteristics, merge at Dhanushkodi.
Unaware of the strong underwater current, tourists tend to get stuck in the sea and drown.
Though warning signs are displayed and policemen also caution tourists, they continue to take bath in the sea in a careless manner. A firefighter, requesting anonymity, said even they do not get into the sea in Dhanushkodi during rescue operations because the waters are rough and there is a massive current.
Only local fishermen can survive in the sea near Dhanushkodi as they know about the waters, the firefighter added.
