Man killed as roof falls in Palladam bus stand
A construction worker died after the roof of a restroom in the Palladam bus stand in Tirupur district collapsed on Saturday night as rains lashed the area.
Coimbatore
Commuters had taken shelter in available spaces in the bus stand as heavy rains pounded the Tirupur region late in the night. Suddenly, they heard a loud thud, but couldn’t identify what had happened as it was pitch dark due to a power outage.
A short while later, the public found the collapsed roofing of the toilet and two men trapped under the construction debris. On receiving information, the Fire and Rescue personnel rushed to the
spot and extricated the two victims.
Of the two, one person died. The deceased, identified as Ashok Kumar (39) of Ammapalayam in Palladam, had taken shelter from the downpour under the extended portion of the toilet roof, and was killed. While Ashok Kumar was found to have succumbed to injuries on the spot, Venkadesan (28) of Kallakinaru in Palladam was rescued with serious injuries and rushed to the Palladam Government Hospital for treatment.
Ashok Kumar is survived by his wife Saraswathi, 32, and three children, including two daughters.
Inquiries by the Palladam police revealed that the roof of the restroom had become soggy and weak due to heavy downpour over the last few days. A case has been registered.
The incident brought back haunting memories of the death of five persons, including three women, after the roof of the Somanur bus stand in Coimbatore collapsed in September last.
Commuters and activists had then questioned the quality of public utility concrete structures and sought to demolish weak ones for the safety of the people.
Meanwhile, in a similar incident on Sunday, a steel sunshade of a hotel collapsed killing a 23-year-old woman, a native of Jharkhand, on the spot, at Avinashi in Tirupur district. The deceased was identified as Saraswathi, working in a textiles firm.
