“If they could get the permission from the Chief Minister, I will ensure Centre’s support in getting a university for nurses,” he said at a function here.
Addressing the inaugural programme of the first National Conference of Nurses – A Voice to Lead on International Nurses Day, he said the number of nursing students graduating every year in Tamil Nadu is approximately 15,000.
“The mission before us is to make health care comprehensive, universal, affordable and qualitatively professional.
For achieving this objective, the road ahead is going to be complex and arduous,” the Governor said adding “It requires the combined efforts of the doctors and nurses to achieve success in the mission. Care concern and consideration for the diseased and the suffering is need of the hour. Let as all resolve on this special day to work together in this noble effort.”
Stating that the state ranks first in the country in terms of number of children immunized and takes pride in the lakhs of eminent medical practitioners and nursing professionals engaged in providing healthcare, the Governor said Tamil Nadu model is the best prototype health care delivery system in resource-limited settings which can be emulated by other states towards a better health care delivery system.
“Hence, it is no wonder that Tamil Nadu serves as a hub for medical tourism in the eastern part of the globe,” he said adding “Today the state attracts about 40 per cent of those who come to India for medical treatment. It has been estimated by the Confederation of Indian Industry that about 15 lakh patients come to Tamil Nadu for diagnosis and treatment.”
Celebrated with candle light vigil
On the occasion of International Nurses Day, nurses in Government Hospitals across the southern districts held candle light vigil and paid tribute to Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing. They took a pledge to improve nursing facilities, care for patients and to render selfless service to the society. A function was organised by Kovilpatti GH in association with Bharathiyar Memorial Trust in which a cake was also cut by the nurses. Similar celebrations were witnessed in Madurai GRH, Thoothukudi GH and Tirunelveli GH.
