The state government had recently approved the setting up of the park to boost tourism in the area. However, the project faces a stiff opposition from the fishermen. On Thursday, they staged a protest and raised slogans against the district administration and the Fisheries Department officials for not listening to their demands.

More than 100 fishing families reside in Sangumal, which is located on the way to Rameswaram from Ramanathapuram. The fishermen venture into sea using small fishing vessels and use buoys and thermocol sheets.

They have been demanding the district administration and fisheries department set up a building to keep their fishing vessels safe.

However, officials proposed to construct a park in the same place where they demanded the building. This enraged the fishermen, who resorted to stage a protest in the village.

The protesters said if the government does not construct a building for them, they will stage a mega protest on May 25 with all their family members.
