A 33-year-old police constable was allegedly murdered by the sand smuggling mafia in Parappadi village in Tirunelveli district late on Sunday night.
Madurai
The constable, identified as Jagadeesan, attached to Special Branch in Vijayanagaram Police station, had received an alert regarding illegal sand mining on Nambiyar river, close to Vijayanagaram. He alerted the local police station and proceeded to the spot all alone.
Four more policemen from the Vijayanagaram station had also checked the spot, but returned as they did not find anything. Only after they returned did they realise that Jagadeesan had not come back to the station.
Jagadeesan’s body was found on Monday morning. There were injury marks on him, while a iron rod and an torch light was found nearby.
On receiving information, Policemen reached the spot and carried out investigation. Tirunelveli SP, Arun Sakthi Kumar, also went to the spot.
After their preliminary investigation, Police suspect a three-member gang to have been behind the incident. Based on a tip-off, two persons identified as Murugan and Madasamy, residents of Vijayanagaram, were secured and interrogated about the murder.
People of Vijayanagaram said illegal sand mining was rampant in Nambiyar river. They said a social activist, Suyambu Chellappa, was murdered by sand miners when he registered police complaints against them. It is shocking that a policeman too has murdered, said a resident.
