Silent stir opposing shifting of bus stand in Pernambut
Members of the bus stand retrieval committee, who have been campaigning against the proposed shifting of the local bus stand, gagged their mouths and staged a sit-in protest in Pernambut on Wednesday.
Vellore
The protesters said they were compelled to do so, after the police refused to grant permission to hold a demonstration in support of their demands on May 4 (Friday).Â
A proposed plan by the district administration to shift the bus stand to the nearby Bungalow Medu drew strong opposition from a section of the public, especially traders, who feel that the move would affect their business.
Hence, to press their demand, the bus stand retrieval committee had sought police permission to hold an agitation on May 4. But the police refused permission citing the proposed visit of President Ram Nath Kovind to Vellore that day.
Upset over this, three members of the committee gagged their mouths and staged a silent protest in a venue near the present bus stand. Police persuaded them to give up their silent protest by assuring that they would allow their agitation on any day after the President’s visit.
