On April 27, hundreds of DMK men staged a protest outside the office of Rajendran demanding his resignation. Apart from this, the opposition party cadre also tried to lay siege to the house of Health Minister in his hometown.

The scam surfaced in July 2016, when a team of Income-Tax department officials searched the residences, offices and godown of a gutkha company owner, who was accused of evading taxes to the tune of Rs 250 crore. The scam pertains to a report of the Income-Tax department to former chief secretary of Tamil Nadu PS Rama Mohana Rao and DGP Ashok Kumar. The report contained details of alleged kickbacks paid by the gutkha unit owner to officials to allow the sale of tobacco products that were banned in Tamil Nadu.
