Bank staff ‘farewell’ for thief with Rs 10 L
A shrewd thief taking advantage of the absence of the staff, who were busy attending the send-off party of their colleague, decamped with Rs 10 lakh in cash from the branch of a nationalised bank in Madurai on Monday.

According to police, a send-off party was organised for a staff of the Indian Bank branch at a four-storeyed building on East Avani Moola Street here on Monday. Since the function was taking place on the third floor all the staff had gone there. Turning the situation to his advantage, an unidentified person sneaked into the office area and decamped with the cash kept in the chamber of the cashier, Sakthi Ganesh.
When Ganesh returned, he was shocked to find the cash missing. The cashier immediately informed the bank manager, who in turn alerted the police.
Vilakuthoon Police have registered a case based on a complaint from the branch manager.
Police said CCTV footage showed a person entering the bank and taking away the cash. The image of the person was being compared with photos of habitual offenders available with police to identify the culprit. Police have also launched a man-hunt to nab the person, who escaped with the cash.
