Farmers block NH against road project
Farmers blocked the Salem-Chennai National Highway with their cattle on Sunday opposing the proposed green corridor project on the Chennai-Salem sector.

The protest disrupted traffic for hours. The farmers said the project has been developed by destroying fertile farms and mineral-rich mountains.
Farmers of Erumapalayam and Panagadu had earlier petitioned the Collector demanding that the project be stopped. As there was no action, they resorted to the road roko with their cattle and plantain crop.
After talks, police used mild force to chase away the farmers and their cattle, sparking tension. The farmers, who were upset with police using force, got into heated quarrels. Later, they withdrew the protest temporarily.
“What is the need to develop the corridor by destroying thousands of acres of fertile farm land? If the project materialises, the next generation may be left without any farm land. Apart from agricultural lands, water sources will also be destroyed by it,” said S Muniappan, a farmer.
