R Gopanna, media head of the TNCC (Tamil Nadu Congress Committee), in his statement, said that Rahul Gandhi has accepted the invitation of TNCC president Su Thirunavukkarasar, who met him in New Delhi and briefed about the current political situation in the state on Tuesday.

Thirunavukkarasar is understood to have met Rahul after over five months. The meeting may put to bed speculation about the imminent change of guard at the TNCC helm. Rumours abound in TNCC with some seniors, mostly TNCC president aspirants, feeding gossips to the media about the AICC announcing a replacement for Thirunavuk-karasar, more so after the incumbent TNCC chief had a couple of his requests seeking audience with Rahul declined.

The statement issued this morning has also vindicated the fears of some party insiders that the national high command has not been engaging Thirunavukkarasar as much as he had liked.

More remarkably, the rendezvous did not discourage rumours about the TNCC guard change from some quarters. Interactions with TNCC functionaries suggest that the high command would take a call on the TNCC president post soon as it ought to have a person sharing good rapport with the DMK, which seems to be preferred or rather wise choice of the Congress party in the state for the ensuing Lok Sabha election due in May 2019.
