More than 3K people petition TNPCB against Sterlite Copper
Demanding permanent closure of Sterlite Copper, more than 3,000 residents from 18 villages surrounding Thoothukudi staged a rally and submitted a petition to Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) and SIPCOT officials on Monday.

Condemning Sterlite and its operations in Thoothukudi, the protesters under the banner of ‘Federation of people of all villages against Sterlite’ assembled in Madathur village and proceeded towards TNPCB office, located in the SIPCOT industrial complex. Although initially prevented by the police, they did not budge and proceeded towards the office.Â
During the rally, the protesters raised slogans against Sterlite Copper and held placards against the company. The massive rally received huge support from the public enroute.Â
When the rally reached TNPCB office, Police allowed only the representatives to submit their petition. The petition was then submitted to District Environmental Engineer, Kannan, who promised to take appropriate action. Following this, the representatives also petitioned SIPCOT officials demanding them to expel the disputed company from their complex.Â
Many women, children and even differently abled persons participated in the rally. More than 500 policemen were stationed for security purpose in SIPCOT and along the entire route of the rally.Â
In the meantime, residents of Kumareddiyapuram village near Thoothukudi continued their protest, which entered the 71st day on Monday. The protest on the campus of Our Lady of Snows Shrine Basilica also entered its 8th day.
