According to police, Anjela Mary, working as a headmistress at a government school in Mottur village in Krishnagiri district was fast asleep in her residence at Shanthi Nagar, when the incident happened.
Her husband Albert, a staff in the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, woke up around 5 am and went for a walk. On his return, he found heavy smoke in the bedroom and was shocked to find the burnt air conditioner.
Police said Anjela Mary suffered burns, but died of suffocation due to heavy smoke. Her body was sent for autopsy at the Krishnagiri Government Hospital. A preliminary inquiry by the Krishnagiri Town Police revealed that the AC caught fire and its compressor exploded due to an electric short circuit in the stabilizer. “We are also probing to know if there was any foul play. Technical experts in handling air conditioners have been called to examine and ascertain the exact reason for the incident,” police said.
