In a statement, CPM state secretary K Balakrishnan stressed to cancel the one-man committee formed to investigate the case, in which a woman assistant professor was arrested in a bid to lure four women students to provide sexual favours for some higher officials.

“It is believed that the inquiry committee is influenced by the Governor and his office, state higher education officials and Madurai Kamaraj University officials. Further, the Governor, who earlier conducted a press conference in this respect, added to suspicions, as if he was involved in the scandal,” he said.

Stating that the Governor, who should also be probed in the case, had formed an enquiry committee, Balakrishnan noted, “This is a clear indication that truths can be hidden and his patting on a women journalist’s cheek bears testimony to the fact that his bad conduct has come to light.” Under such circumstances, Purohit should be recalled by the Centre, he added.

Charging that the Governor already deprived state’s rights and intervened in state administration, the CPM leader said, “He seems to be running the entire government machinery. Moreover, the one-man enquiry committee should not function under Governor’s direction.”

Taking such incidents into consideration, the government should immediately cancel the probe committee. “A high-level probe committee should be formed under the direct supervision of the Supreme Court,” he added.

“The CPM will besiege Raj Bhavan on April 25. Former MLA and central committee member A Soundararajan, Politburo member G Ramakrishnan and other functionaries will participate in the protest,” he added.

It may be noted that the CPM was the only party, which earlier demanded the Centre to recall the Governor and the party held agitations at various places across the state.
