DT Effect: Corporation clears piled-up waste in Sarbanamedu
Reacting to the story titled “Garbage problem continues to haunt Vellore district”, which appeared in DT Next on Wednesday, corporation officials swung into action and cleared the piled-up garbage in Sarbanamedu locality within hours.
Vellore
“The problem is that the area is hilly with narrow streets and is populated by poorer sections of society. Therefore, corporation lorries are unable to traverse the stretch,” said Corporation Commissioner C Vijayakumar, who visited the Sarbanamedu locality on Thursday morning.
Stating that he was approached by a local woman who requested him to convene a meeting of locals, he said, “We plan to convene a meeting soon in the locality and provide a one-day training programme on garbage segregation. We will ensure that the corporation’s motorized three-wheelers start collecting garbage at a specific time every day. Degradable garbage will be collected daily and non-degradable waste on Wednesdays.”
A source in the local body alleged that the civic officials never bothered to enter the area because it is difficult to access. This had resulted in piling up of garbage dumped on roadsides by the locals. It was also the same reason due to which garbage bins and corporation vehicles were not provided to the locality, he added.
