Demanding permanent closure of Sterlite Copper, the MDMK leader commenced his rally from Kovilpatti at around 4 pm in the evening. Travelling in an open van, he greeted his supporters enroute to Kulathur, where he had planned to conclude the rally.
He also addressed the public at various points from the van and spoke about the hazards posed by the disputed copper unit. From Kovilpatti, Vaiko travelled to Ettayapuram, Nagalapuram, Pudhur, Vilathikulam, Soorangudi, Vembar and finally reached Kulathur late night on Tuesday.
In Kulathur, when he started addressing the public from the open van, a miscreant standing at a nearby photo studio suddenly hurled a liquor bottle and then fled the spot. However, the liquor bottle hit another vehicle stationed behind Vaiko’s van.
The incident, which forced Vaiko to abruptly stop his speech, created tension among the crowd. Following that Vaiko’s supporters rushed to the photo studio and enquired about the person who hurled the liquor bottle. When the men in the photo studio could not identify the culprit, the cadre picked up dispute with them.
Police had to intervene and pacify Vaiko’s supporters, following which Vaiko continued his speech and ended his rally in Kulathur. Police are investigating the incident.
