Tamil Nadu govt to launch e-repository to promote artisans, traditional craft
In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Tamil Nadu government has envisaged the launch of an e-repository of artisans in the state to showcase the intricate craft and the craftsmen behind it.

The e-repository would have complete details of every artisan, benefiting both the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation (THDC) and the craftsmen.
A census of the artisans and creation of a database on them is currently under way. Consequently, it was felt that their stories are relevant to highlight the traditional values of ancient arts and culture in order to dedicate them to the people.
A senior THDC official told DT Next on Monday that the corporation aims to encourage and hone the talent of artisans by training them, helping them improve their product quality and providing them social security by marketing their products.
According to him, the THDC would build capacity of the artisans and help them cater to the changing demands of consumers. It would also help nurture traditional culture and make these ancient arts and crafts flourish.
The artisans’ stories will be captured in the digital format comprising text, high-resolution photos of crafts and high-definition video with audio. “The THDC is trying to engage a suitable agency to visit the artisans onsite, capture their story and publish in the portal,” the official said.
Accordingly, the THDC has decided to create original content of interest to the public focusing on the artisans’ testimonials, skills, craft, heritage and culture. “Videos of the artisans with voice/background audio and photos would focus on attracting a global audience and improve the livelihood of the artisans. Such an initiative would showcase testimonials of the artisans and highlight shopping attractions to the public,” the official added.
The official said professional photographers and videographers, along with officials, would visit the artisans’ production location and capture the text, video and photo content. “During the first phase, about 200 artisans will be covered,” the official added.
What would the database have?
- Complete details of every artisan in Tamil Nadu, including their testimonials, skills, craft, heritage and culture
- The artisans’ testimonials would be captured in text, high-resolution photo and high-definition video with audio formats
- 200 Artisans to be covered during the first phase
