While around 60 per cent of work on the Mookaiyur project has been completed, work on the Kundhukal fish jetty project had not started. Rs 70 crore had been allotted for the same.
In this backdrop, a team of officials from state and central governments carried out an inspection on Monday to explore the possibility of constructing a harbour in Kundhukal.
Led by Sanjay Panda, Joint Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, the team consisted of Brajendra Navnit, Joint Secretary, Prime Minister’s Office, and other officials from the state government. The team was guided by Ramanathapuram Collector, S Natarajan, who explained the geographical features of Kundhukal.
Following the inspection, a state government official said, “If a harbour is setup, 400 to 450 boats going for deep sea fishing can be stationed in the harbour. The facility will provide proper security for the boats.”
Close to 500 fishermen had applied for boats to go to deep sea fishing, he said, adding that the construction of the boats is being undertaken at the ship building yard in Kochi.
