NLC besieged, TTV tells BJP to act unbiased on Cauvery
Thamizhga Vazhvurimai Katchi led by T Velmurugan on Tuesday besieged the Neyveli Lignite Corporation, a public sector unit run by the Union government, opposing the extraction of Lignite to generate electricity and supply power to states, including Karnataka.
Coimbatore
Thousands of cadre gathered in front of the NLC, which was fortified by hundreds of policemen to prevent them from entering the NLC premises.
The protesters raised slogans against supplying electricity to Karnataka from Neyveli using the Lignite extracted from the area. When Karnataka is claiming sole right to water flowing in the state, how it can benefit from the mineral extracted from Tamil Nadu, asked Velmurugan, who took part in the rally headed by Tamil nationalist leader P Nedumaran. Activists belonging to Naam Thamizhar Katchi and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi took part in the protest.
Meanwhile, in Salem, Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) leader TTV Dhinakaran urged the BJP-led Centre to act unbiased over Cauvery issue.
Spearheading a massive protest, he said that BJP is punishing people of Tamil Nadu for its own political gains in Karnataka polls. “Parties are protesting against the Centre to secure our rights, but the spineless AIADMK has been mocking it as a drama,” he added.
“The AIADMK legislators, even at the risk of losing their posts, should pressurise the Centre to file the draft before May 3. They should do so at least with a selfish interest to win elections, if they contest next time,” he said. The AMMK leader also called upon the youth to boycott IPL matches. “I do not agree with showing black flags to Prime Minister during his visit to Tamil Nadu,” he added.
