    Four of a family, 4 others die in different accidents

    In two different ghastly accidents in the state on Monday four of a family from Chennai, who were returning from Kodaikanal, died in a road accident in Kattakamanpatti village, near Batlagundu, in Dindigul district and two others died and 10 were seriously injured in a collision between a van and a lorry near Perundurai in Erode district.

    Moreover, two persons were killed while as many were injured when a car in which they were traveling hit a wall in an over-bridge at Athur by-pass road near Salem. 

    According to Batlagundu police, Abdul Rashid (44), an employee of a private firm in Gumudipoondi in Chennai, along with his family and friends had gone to Kodaikanal in three cars and were returning to Chennai. 

    While nearing Kattakampatti village on Theni-Batlagundu Road, the car in which Rashid travelled had a head-on-collision with a TNSTC bus coming from Batlagundu. Three of the family died on the spot while Rashid’s daughter died at the hospital. The deceased were identified as Rashid, his wife Rasina Begum (35), their son Fazil (12) and their daughter Lamya (14). Vasil (12), twin brother of Fazil and one Adhil (10), son of Mohammed, Rashid’s friend, suffered grievous injuries and are admitted to Theni GH.  The two other cars in the party almost reached Tiruchy without knowing about the fate of the car. They rushed back on hearing the news of the accident. 

    In the Perundurai accident, a family of seven persons were returning from a trip to Palghat in Kerala when the mishap happened on the Thudupathi-Seenapuram junction around 5 30 am. The van driver Ponnusamy (30) and the substitute driver Siva (30) were crushed to death when the vehicle collided head on with a garment-laden lorry from Coimbatore. Police said that seven others in the van suffered injuries. The lorry driver and two others in the vehicle too were injured in the collision. 

    In the Athur by-pass road accident, police said private company employees from Chennai went to Kerala to attend a function and the accident took place when they were returning to Chennai.  Among the deceased, one person hails from Chennai, while other from Tiruvannamalai district.
