Protest against school for punishing girls sporting kumkum and flowers

More than 150 members of the public and Hindu Munnani workers staged a demonstration in front of a private matriculation school at Devikapuram near Chetpet in Tiruvannamalai district on Friday. They protested against the school management for punishing two girls for sporting flowers in their head and kumkum on their foreheads recently.

The incident came to light when the two Class 8 girls of the minority run institution were reportedly punished by making them kneel after first demanding that they remove the kumkum from their foreheads and flowers from their hair, two days ago.

On hearing of this, the parents accosted the school management, who reportedly said that the parents could take the students off from the school if the girls were unwilling to obey the rules of the institution.

When relatives of the girls heard of this, they along with cadres of the Hindu Munnani staged a demonstration in front of the school demanding that the management apologise and change their ways. The crowd then blocked Polur-Chetpet Main Highway resulting in the traffic being affected.

Police rushed to the spot and spoke with the agitators after which they dispersed. Police are also investigating the  incident.
