TN gets Rs 40 cr extra funds for education post good performance
With Tamil Nadu identified as one of the well performing states in higher education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has sanctioned additional Rs 40 crore under Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) in the appreciation of good performance in the project.

TEQIP scheme has been implemented through MHRD and state government with allocation of Rs 142.10 crore.
Higher Education Department sources here said that the project cost was shared between Central and state governments as 75% and 25% respectively till 2014-15. From the year 2015-16 onwards, it was shared equally. In Tamil Nadu, four government engineering colleges, three government aided engineering colleges, one constituent college of Anna University at Tiruchy and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University are utilising the funds under the project.Â
Accordingly, Tamil Nadu is identified as one of the well performing states among 23 participating States in TEQIP in entire country. In appreciation of the good performance among the participating states in TEQIP phase two, an additional fund of Rs 40 crore was sanctioned by MHRD.Â
Tamil Nadu’s initiatives under TEQIP includes, modernisation of laboratories, workshops and libraries, financial assistance for 3,786 PG students and financial Assistance for 417 Ph.D. scholars. In addition, publication of 5,761 research papers and 143 books, a total of 56 patent rights filed and from which 17 patents obtained. Similarly, several institutions were granted autonomous status by University Grants Commission (UGC).Â
Likewise, about 50 programmes were accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA), conducting 1,165 in-house training programmes for teaching faculty, organising 90 inhouse programmes for non-teaching staff.Â
A total of 1,743 teaching faculty have attended 4,230 training programmes in institutions such as IITs, NITs, NITTTR, IIMs and government organisations all over the country.Â
