Farmers irked by agri market closure
Agitated over the refusal to allow their paddy-laden vehicles inside the government market committee complex, farmers blocked the Melmaruvathur road and stopped traffic at Vandavasi in Tiruvannamalai district on Monday night.
Tiruvannamalai
The complex has been established to help farmers who lacked space to stock their produce for a nominal fee, while they awaited good prices.Â
On Monday night, farmers were taken aback when they found the gates of the market committee complex closed.Â
Farmers who asked the staff for a reason were reportedly told the complex was closed to prevent piling up of paddy stocks, as the facility already stored a heavy load of paddy bags that had not been weighed.Â
Angered over this, farmers blocked the Melmaruvathur road with their tractors and bullock carts. They stopped vehicular movement on the stretch for more than one hour.Â
After receiving information, the Vandavasi South police rushed to the spot and held talks with the market committee staff, who then opened the gates and allowed the vehicles to come in.
