Using social networking site Twitter, the official account Sterlite Copper responded to a series of celebrities who had posted about the issue.Â
In a series of tweets directed at vocal critics such as Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, GV Prakash and Hiphop Aadhi, the industry clarified that there was little credible evidence linking the activities of the industry to spike in cancer cases.Â
It said that the senior executives of the firm reside within a 1-km radius of the plant for over 20 years, as well as stating that Thoothukudi district ranks third in the state in HDI – as per Tamil Nadu Human Development Report 2017. Â
It added that the necessary additions such as an effluent treatment plant have been functional since its inception.Â
The account also posted info on Sterlite’s bio-diversity efforts such as their green belt development being a sustainable initiative and that the Sterlite Township was an abode for different species of migratory birds.Â
It also added that the Forest Research Institute confirms good eco-system health around the unit.
