Immolation bid by man at Madurai Collectorate to regularise wife’s job
A man set himself on fire demanding that his wife be made permanent in her job, at the Collectorate here on Thursday. He is battling for his life in a hospital after suffering 70 per cent burns in the incident.

The man, later identified as Jesuraja of Dinamani Nagar here, reached the Collectorate on his bike with a petrol can and approached the office of the South Zone Tahsildar. On reaching the spot, he doused himself with petrol and torched himself.
As he could not tolerate the flames, he started running and people at the spot panicked. However, they tried to douse the fire by throwing sand at him. He was immediately was rushed to the GRH and underwent treatment. Doctors said Jesuraja sustained 70 per cent burns and was battling for his life.
In the meantime, petitions were found in his bike. In the petition, Jesuraja said his wife, Leo Jesintha, was working as a BT assistant at a minority school, and though she was working for the past 15 years in the institution she has not been made permanent.
Also in the petition Jesuraja alleged that juniors. who had joined work after his wife, were made permanent and the main reason for this denial was their caste. Even the school authorities discriminated against his wife and fellow teachers were not allowed to talk to her, he alleged.
Because of the low salary, their family had been suffering for long he said and demanded action against the school management and justice for his wife.
