Over 2 kg gold bars seized at Tiruchy, Madurai airports
The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Tiruchy International Airport on Sunday late night seized gold worth 32 lakhs from a passenger who arrived from Kuala Lumpur.

According to sources, while the officials involved in the checking of the belongings of the passengers of Air Asia that arrived from Kuala Lumpur, they suspected a passenger on the grounds of his behaviour and stopped him. On inspection of his belongings thoroughly, they seized 1040 grams of gold with three big cut pieces of 24 carat gold biscuits. The passenger was identified as Jailaudeen (37), a resident of Tiruchy who was bound from Malaysia.
In a separate incident, customs officials at Madurai Airport seized 994 grams of unclaimed gold in Madurai Airport, on Monday.Â
Based on a tip off, Customs officials from Madurai Airport had checked the baggage of all the passengers from Sri Lanka but they did not find any gold. Further, they started checking the flight but still they found no gold.Â
While returning to the Airport building from the flight after the inspection, they saw five gold bars hidden in the aero bridge, that connects the flight with the Airport. The officials seized the gold and carried out investigation but could not find out the person who carried the gold.Â
The Customs informed that the total value of the gold would be around Rs 31 lakh.Â
It is said with the holiday season around the corner, several agencies including the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) are monitoring the city which is also the hot hub of gold smuggling in the state.
