Locals oppose sand quarry at Kollidam, seek Collector’s help
Condemning the move to set up a new sand quarry along the Kollidam riverbed, residents and farmers from Vilangudi near Tiruvaiyaru approached the Thanjavur collector on Monday urging the government to withdraw the plan. They said they had experienced heavy loss of crops without water and the new quarries would result in further drinking water shortage.

They claimed that Public Works department (PWD) officials were gearing up to establish a sand quarry at survey number 1-A, Block 1 of Kollidam river in their village.
They said earlier when such an attempt was made, the residents had opposed the move since the quarry would suck the ground water and so it was dropped. During peace meetings, officials had assured them that no other quarry would be set up in the area.
The residents said if dredging of sand is allowed in the area, it would affect fertile lands within 150 metres of the proposed quarry.
Moreover, the ground water to the borewells nearby would be depleted, rendering the paddy fields fallow. The Kollidam river bank, which is within 500 metres of the proposed quarry, was a breachprone location and it would affect the residential areas from Vilangudi to Punalvasal, they said.
They also claimed the pumping stations for supplying water to Thanjavur, Perambalur and Ariyalur were nearby and the quarry may hit supply to these towns.
